The idea behind R-Projects is to create a website for photography (also including written pieces and extracts), based on our experiences through work and travel. The main theme of the site is "reflection"; referring to a process of thought in response to the things and issues we came across. Reflection is meant in its broadest sense, ranging from simple contemplation and appreciation of aesthetics, to deeper thought and commentary about economic opportunity, politics, human rights and civil society. The two media, photography and writing, are intended to reinforce each other; a photograph to visualise the thoughts and the commentary to give context and explain why the photograph was taken.
The photographs divide themselves into five themes - ways of living, expression, politics and conflict, vistas, and, working and earning. Although the boundaries between these themes are blurred, separating the photographs out into these distinct groups helps explain our reasons for taking them. Whereas photography can be used as a medium for capturing things that are pleasing to the eye, it can also be used as a way to comment on, or even come to terms with, a situation that is personally intriguing or difficult for the photographer. These photographs have been taken for both these reasons - documenting issues and events that we experienced first hand and wanted other people to see but also as a means of preserving a beautiful image.
