The main aim of R-Projects is to show the viewer that there are common themes and structures to people's lifestyles no matter what their cultural background or situation. Far too often, we think about other societies as "different" or even threatening to our own way of living. Sensationalist images in the media can reinforce this tendency, fostering a critical fascination, mistrust or even fear about other cultures. Such sentiments make it far easier to accept and justify war and conflict within and between societies. This website tries to show, on the other hand, that there are similarities in routine situations across different countries and cultures. The images and aesthetics that we think typify another country or culture can have understated and familiar qualities as well as being impressive or "strange". Even war and conflict can affect people in quite subtle ways that we can all relate to. The website aims to encourage the viewer to think for themselves about the commonalities and differences between different societies rather than presenting extreme images that might alienate or foster a feeling of estrangement.
We would like to hear what you think or see any of your own contributions!
